I'm calling the new blog site a photo journal because there'll be less emphasis on text and more emphasis on the photos. I chose the horizontal layout to be different (although it's growing in popularity), but mostly because I think it's a better way to showcase story-telling imagery.

The blog/journal will continue to be a mix of personal and business posts. In fact, most of the posts that go up in the next few weeks will be on the personal side. If you're a prospective client interested in my family commissions, my personal posts will give you a good idea of how I approach family photography.

Because of the new layout I decided not to import old blog posts from here into the new site. The old images are not the right size for the new layout and, honestly, I just wanted a fresh start to go with my new website that launched a couple of weeks ago. That said, the new blog is looking pretty empty now, but I have lots of new content lined up, so stay tuned.

New goals now are to work on my SEO for the sites, order new marketing materials and to start advertising more of my services within the local community. I stayed in the shadows for much of my first year in business, as I was really just trying to find my place in the industry. Now that I have a clearer vision for my business and the niche I want to serve, I feel more confident in my ability to make this dream a success.

For a while now I’ve needed a permanent space to display my portfolio images and to provide more information about my work. Yes, I have this blog, but it was never meant to be long-term. In fact, it’s going to be replaced in a couple of weeks, but that is an entirely different topic that will be discussed soon enough. For now, let’s rewind to two years ago...

In December of 2008 I was scoping out Black Friday sales online and came across a very simple website template and impulsively jumped at the chance to buy it... but, I jumped too soon! There it sat, in cyberspace limbo, unused because I didn’t know exactly what to fill it with. You see, I had this desire to work for myself because I had stalked photo blogs for years, dreaming that I could do what others were successfully doing. Let’s just say I’ve come a long way since then, slowly learning the ins and outs of what it takes to get a small business up and running, and I’ve only just begun.

On February 10, 2010--just over a year ago--I received my official Certificate of Organization from the Secretary of State, certifying the formation of my company, Rebecca S. Allen, LLC. Then in April of 2010, I officially announced the creation of Rebecca Allen Photography (my “doing business as” or “fictitious name” as it is legally referred to). I kicked-off the creation with a launch party that coincided with a reception and gallery show of my work during one of our local Artrageous Friday’s events. Since then it’s been quite the learning experience and a reminder that sometimes self-employment isn’t all wine and roses (for instance, book keeping=no fun). I have grown so much already and I’m thankful for the clients this past year who’ve connected with my photography and who’ve put their faith in me to document their lives. Thank you for hiring me and welcoming me as your personal photographer.

So yes, this is an exciting time. It’s a time of transition and new direction, and now I have a platform to showcase the best of my ever evolving work. Since I purchased that template a couple years back I’ve done a lot of soul-searching in regard to the direction that I want to point my business. Specifically, I’ve spent a great deal of time this past year breaking down just what it is about photography that I enjoy so much. What is it that drives me to pick up a camera on a daily basis? What’s the inspiration? What’s the purpose? From a business standpoint, what it is that I have to offer that others are not doing? Why do I think I can succeed in an industry and a market that is already saturated with successful (and sometimes not so successful) photographers? Those are tough questions, but I know they’re important ones to answer if I am to go any further. Yet, do not fear, for further I will go! It may not be at the speed I want, but with this new direction and determination, I will forge on with this exciting and unfolding career path.

In future posts I’ll explain more about the new commissions I’m offering, but for now, I’ll wrap this up and leave you with the link to the new site. I hope you enjoy it and I would really love to hear your feedback!

A Roaring 20's Mardi Gras -- Dupuy style!

Last Saturday, as I wound my way through a crowd of ladies and gents dolled up in 20's-inspired attire, I heard several exclaim that the Dupuy's 5th annual Mardi Gras party was, "the best one yet" and, "they really outdid themselves this time". The theme? A Roaring 20's Speakeasy, as modeled by the impeccably dressed hostess and host above. The private affair promised fun for all invited, so long as they remembered the top-secret passphrase required to enter. Once inside, guests were greeted by the sounds of a hoppin' swing band and taken back to an era of flappers, gangsters, gambling and hooch. It really was the bee's knee's! John and Sarah -- thanks for hosting such a splendid affair and inviting me back to document it this year. You're the cat's meow!

Mariah Charmayne Latimer ~ Forever Family, February 14, 2011

According to Wikipedia, "Saint Valentine's Day, commonly shortened to Valentine's Day, is an annual commemoration held on February 14th, celebrating love and affection between intimate companions." Some might also define it as the day to buy overpriced flowers and chocolate covered strawberries. And some of us might not acknowledge it all. But for 15-year-old Mariah, Valentine's Day has taken on a whole new meaning, and it couldn't be any sweeter. This past Monday, February 14, 2011, Mariah became an official Latimer family member through an adoption proceeding witnessed by a dozen close family members and friends.

Although Dena and Samantha Latimer were married in a March 2009 ceremony in Martha's Vineyard, MA, Missouri law currently allows for only one of them to adopt Mariah now, with an option to complete a second-parent adoption at a later time. Although Dena officially took the stand as the legally adoptive parent, Samantha stood there in spirit and watched from the benches as Mariah was sworn in. The smile on Samantha's face said it all. She didn't have to be standing up there to know that Mariah was just as much hers as Dena's. They were both getting a daughter that day.

At this point I have to interject and say that the following court photos would not have been possible without the kindness of two people: the Latimer's attorney and the Judge. Long story short, camera's are not looked upon lightly in the courthouse. Period. I knew this from my days of newspaper photography and basically using your camera in any governmental building is a challenge. The other kicker, I had no time to research or try to make contacts for permission to photograph since I booked this commission with less than 24-hour notice. Apparently the only photo ever allowed during adoption proceedings is a single cheesy posed shot with the judge afterward. Afterward?!?! What, are you kidding me? As if the most important moment to document during the whole experience is a staged snapshot of the family with an uncomfortable judge who just wants to get on with her morning. I don't think so. Enter super photographer Rebecca Allen here. I just couldn't see how I was going to walk out of that courtroom with only one photo. But, with some persistence (after going through two other "officials"), I was able to plead my case with the Latimer's attorney who agreed to speak to the judge on my behalf for permission to take photos. I don't know what the attorney said, but even the security guard was shocked that the judge permitted me to photograph. The whole thing lasted maybe 15 minutes and then it was over. And so as that chapter closed in Mariah's life, a new one began with a new last name and two proud Moms overwhelmed with joy to finally call her "their daughter".

The raw emotion shown in this next set of photos is what documentary photography is all about. While editing these photos they reminded me of something Samantha had shared with me via email the night before the adoption. She wrote, "The overwhelming emotion that MJ [Mariah] displayed when she was given the news of our pending date and time was priceless. She laughed and cried, screamed and shook, all while trying to maintain her composure. It was a moment that we will never forget, it still gives me chills just thinking about it."

Good Morning! I wanted to get these photos up yesterday but I had computer troubles. The following photos were taken yesterday morning between 8-10a.m. This was the state of downtown during the early hours of the snow removal operation.

After my solo trip I encouraged the guys to bundle up and get out with me. Logan loves big machinery and I thought he'd enjoy seeing the equipment in action.

Here's what remains of a snowman that Seth and Logan built last weekend. This is on the east side of the courthouse, which we often refer to as our "side yard".

What better way to end our snow adventure than with some homemade snow cream. Just a little milk, vanilla and sugar to taste...

...then mix it in with the snow...

...and top with sprinkles! I topped mine with chocolate and it was yummy! We saved a bowl of snow in the freezer so we could make more later.

Hello! Oh, man, have I been a bad blogger or what!?!?!? Yikes. Well, all I have to say is that it's for good reason. GREAT reason, really. You see, since early December I finally decided to focus on pulling a website together. Also a new blog. No, not an update to this one, but a brand-spankin' new one to go along with the new portfolio site. Since I launched this little biz back in April I've never had a properly branded web presence to represent my style. Just this free Blogger blog that I was so proud to have customized on my own with a little self-taught HTML crash course. Don't get me wrong, it's served it's purpose as a platform for me to showcase favorite session and family images, but there isn't much else to it. I've always wanted something more informative and visually appealing, and I think the new look will fill the void. Anyway, that's where my focus has been the past two months.

As I get closer to debuting the new RAP site and blog I'll post an update to let you know to be on the lookout. It's a really exciting time for me and I can't wait to see what 2011 will bring for RAP!

p.s. Seth snapped the fabulous photo you see above. As the family photographer, I'm not in many photos with Logan, so I cherish every image showing us together, posed or not. I just love Logan's expression.

Sneaky Silence

More than a few minutes of silence from Logan--other than when he's sleeping--is rarely a good thing. Silence = Mischief. I only left him alone for a few minutes to check email. When I realized it was waaaaay too quiet, I made my way to his room and peeked in. BUSTED!

But hey, it's washable marker and at least it wasn't on the wall. Instead of being disappointed in his choice to decorate himself, I did what any nostalgic-photo-mom would do. I documented it.

As a newspaper photographer I always dreaded sports assignments. Part of being able to successfully document sports action is knowing the rules of the game so you can anticipate the next move. And for someone like me who doesn't follow sports, anticipating the next move is almost impossible. Despite my lack of interest, I was the paper's evening shooter which meant it was my duty to cover sports and most of the time that meant high school football. I don't know that I ever really got "money shot" that my editor was looking for but I'd like to think that I at least improved a little with each passing game.
Fast forward to now, six years later, and I still haven't perfected my sports-shooting skills. So, when I found out Justin and Lauren were planning on taking the boys to a park for their session and "tossing the football around" I thought, oh, this won't be hard, it's not like high school football. But you know what? It was! Those boys were all over the place! And not just with the football. They also whizzed around the park on their Razor scooters and explored lots of places of foot, and rarely together. There was hardly a time when I could get the whole family in the frame at once (that shot above was, like, one of three). So when I got home and assessed what I captured, I was pleasantly pleased. I may not be a sports or high-action shooter, but I think I managed to snag some good ones. When post-processing my favorites for the blog I realized that the majority of my images really stood out in black in white, so you won't see any color in this post.

The following images are just a sampling of what I captured during my afternoon on their homestead outside of Rocheport. I love it when I can hang around and document family rituals like meal time and that's exactly how we ended our session that day.

You gotta love a girl who shows up for her senior session in jeans, a t-shirt, worn sneakers and a pair of cool shades...AND NOTHING ELSE. No change of outfit, no touch-up makeup, no accessories, NO NOTHIN! This no-nonsense girl is my fabulous niece, Kate, who traveled almost three hours for me to photograph her senior session this past weekend. We had a great time roaming The District and parts of the MU campus. My primary focus was on creating environmental portraits--ones that would use setting, light and emotion to tell the story of her personality. It's basically my way of blending my documentary style with some creative portraiture. And frankly, I think these images are a pretty spot-on reflection of this young lady.

Kate, you were a natural in front of the camera. Hope you and your family enjoy the images!

Lots of Apples

A few weeks ago I spent a pleasant afternoon at my friend Emma's house preparing homemade apple juice and apple sauce. Another friend, Jen, was also there and the three of us peeled and peeled and peeled what seemed like bucket after bucket of organic apples from Emma and Scott's tree. I brought my camera along and thought I'd share some detail photos from that afternoon.

I'm actually heading back to Emma and Scott's house tomorrow afternoon for a documentary family session. Please check the blog in a week or so to see my favorite images from that session. Below are a few pics I snagged of Emma with baby daughter, Lula, and son, Avery, during our apple extravaganza. I can't wait to photograph more of their family tomorrow!

The S Family ~ Columbia, MO documentary children's photography

I spent a fun two hours hanging out with this family of five last Saturday afternoon. Dave is a friend and a great local artist whose work is displayed in many businesses and homes in and outside of Columbia. He let me use his studio space back in April for my launch party and I wanted to return the favor by documenting some of his family's time together. I'm really excited about these images because they're the type of images that I'd want of my own family. They're totally unscripted, and together tell an authentic story of this family's time spent at home and around their property. My style of photography is not about posing, or only shooting during golden light hours. It's not about coordinating outfits and pretty props. Its not about getting that single perfect portrait. It's about telling the real story of a family through a series of authentic, documentary images. It's about families being themselves in whatever situation they've asked me to photograph them in. And when that happens I get to capture real images, like the ones you see here.

Jeff and Andrea are such a fun couple to be around, not to mention fabulous hosts. I spent the latter part of a Saturday afternoon with them at home, followed by a stroll downtown. Recently I asked friends Holly and Billy if I could photograph their kiddos and I'm so excited they were up for it. I spent about an hour exploring a favorite neighborhood creek with them last Saturday morning, but then time was cut short due to Lydia's nap. I really wanted to show more of home life with this trio and asked Holly if I could return with my camera...so I will see them again on Sunday! For now, here's a sampling from Saturday's shoot (I couldn't get enough of Lydia so there's a bit more of her :)

I'm currently going through a portfolio overhaul and revisiting photographs from this summer. I came across this lovely image of Josie and thought it would be a nice one to share. I think it really captures the sweetness of a childhood summer. It's a beautiful honest portrait of her with sweat and matted hair, not to mention her captivating gaze. That's a signature Josie "look" for sure!

Dear Logan,

Today you are three years old! You are such a big boy... a mini-man of sorts. You have no idea how much we love you, how everyday is better because you're in our lives. It's really indescribable. You blow us away by your size and your smarts and dashing good looks! You're certainly slimming out as you get older, but your cheeks are still so pinch worthy and kissable. You fill our world with such delight and chaos and we wouldn't have it any other way! You make us laugh with your funny faces and phrases. You're adventurous, headstrong and completely stubborn, yet surprisingly at times can can be quite shy and reserved.

You love old-school cartoons like Scooby Doo, the Jetsons, Smurfs, Flinstones and Pink Panther, only because you're growing up in a household sans TV and are stuck with reruns on the computer. You're generally a human garbage disposal but recently decided to ban mushrooms, zucchini & yellow squash from your diet. And can you believe you don't like candy! Instead you prefer mints, the Lifesaver kind, and will eat a whole roll in one sitting if we let you. You're a master trike rider, Thomas the Train track constructor and Lincoln Log builder. You like to cook in your play kitchen and whip up stir fry with tofu and bok choy--but what you really love is to help us in the real kitchen. You love Bob the Builder and Toy Story, Matchbox and Hot Wheel cars, swimming and more swimming, slides and sandboxes. You still crawl into bed with us in the middle of the night and wake up way too early. You've been to Disney World, Mount Rushmore, the Rocky Mountains and many boring parts of Kansas and Nebraska. You've experienced many things in your short three years and many more things to come!

Logan, you're surrounded by such love and support. As parents we couldn't be more proud of the little man you're turning out to be. Today you're three years old! It's your day, you're way (as if that's different from any other day!) and we wish you the best birthday ever! We love you, lots! Mom and Dad

The windows in our new place are awesome! This in our living room area. A sneak peek at Logan's room is coming soon. I've been holding off on the entire post that debuts our new downtown residence because we aren't finished unpacking or decorating yet. Those tasks should be complete in the next couple of weeks (hopefully!) and then we can finally invite people over for a bit of an apartment-warming. Yay, can't wait!

Okay, so I'm a bit biased when it comes to declaring that the cutest baby boy ever is my son Logan (well, I guess he's not a baby anymore since he'll be 3 next month)...but I must admit that handsome little Victor runs a close second. His eyes are beautiful and his cheeks are so pinch-worthy. Victor just celebrated his one year birthday, and what better way to commemorate his 12 months of life than with a Play Date photo session by me :) I mean, really, all children should have their photo taken by me when they turn one....or two or three or just anytime! Proof of fun times is below. And, of course, big brother Dante makes an appearance in some photos, too, along with Mom and Dad! Enjoy!

It appears John and Victor aren't as impressed with Sarah's bubble blowing skills as Dante is...perhaps they're just jealous. Or practicing their serious look. Like father, like son.

Ha! Love it!

Okay, now here's where I emphasize that I am NOT a portrait photographer. I'm a documentarian and I love to take photographs of people doing what they do and not what I tell them to do. But I also believe that every family should have a recent photo of all the family members together, even if it's not "perfect". It was a bit challenging to get Dante to cooperate for the family shot, probably because I waited too late in the session to accomplish it (note to self: do the serious stuff first--then play). So, here are two examples of how this went down. I'm partial to the black and white image because it is more natural and representative of how things really were (and check out little bro picking on big bro!), but the color image was our goal. So, what are your favorites? Don't be shy... leave a comment below and tell John and Sarah just how cute their kids are!

A Play Date with Iris ~ Columbia, MO children's photography

Kyle and Megan are good friends of ours, so naturally I jumped at the chance to photograph their daughter, Iris, when the opportunity came along. We scheduled an early morning session and started at home as they got ready for an outing to the Columbia Farmer's Market and Shelter Gardens. Iris is so sweet and easy to photograph. My play date with her was filled with lots of exploring and ended with an early lunch at Steak and Shake. It was hard to pick my favorites to post, but hopefully this set will you give you a good idea of how much fun we had that day!

QUICK UPDATE!
Hi all! I'm so sorry for the absence on the blog. I've got good reason, though, as we just closed on the sale of our home today! We're downtown apartment dwellers now (moved in at the beginning of the month) and it is sooo much fun. We just got Internet service yesterday after being without for two weeks, hence the absence. I am super excited to fill you in on this stage in our lives, but for now it must wait a bit longer. I want to have visuals to go with the story :)

Otherwise, in recent weeks I've photographed a couple of children's play date sessions and have been editing those while I've been without connection to the world. I'm looking forward to sharing a blog post of fun times with 17-month-old Iris at the Columbia Farmer's Market and Shelter Gardens. We romped around those locations early this month and I've been itching to get a preview on the blog ever since. I also spent some time with 1-year-old Victor at his home playing around in the backyard. Previews of that session will be up soon as well. Lastly, I have more photos to share from our family vacation to Disney World, so as you can tell there are several items in line waiting for some blog love.

Disney Vacation Highlights - Part 1

Well, we can say with a smile that we survived a week at Disney World (we just won't talk about chipped teeth or the plane ride home with a cranky child). It was a lot of fun--hot and exhausting, but mostly fun!--and it was all made possible by my generous mother-in-law, Gloria. She had been saving for years to take her grandkids to the most magical place on earth and this summer her dream became a reality. We stayed at a Disney resort, had Fastpass options for the rides (to eliminate long waits) and a pre-paid dining plan for meals. In short, Gloria is awesome! She made this a super easy vacation for us and gave Logan an experience that we as parents may never be able to replicate. We've said it to her a bunch already, but Gloria, thank you SO MUCH for your generosity in planning such a wonderful and memorable trip for us!

I made the decision to pack only my camera body, one lens, an extra battery with charger and my cards for storing photos. As much as I wanted to document everything, I knew that I couldn't shed total parental responsibility and wander around with the camera glued to my face all day. Packing a minimal amount of gear curbed the urge. It enabled me to focus more on the experience in present time, rather than thinking about what it would look like later as a photograph. Compared to my usual numbers, I really didn't take many pictures. I did make sure to capture some images of each day, though, if anything just so Logan would have memories of the trip. He's almost three, but I don't know how much he'll really retain.

The following pictures are from day 1 in Animal Kingdom and day 2 in Magic Kingdom. We actually went to back to MK on the 5th day as well, but you'll see those pics in a later post. Now, onto our safari adventure. I really liked the hanging moss covering many of the trees.

We hadn't even been at Disney 24 hours and Logan was fed up with my picture taking!

My actual birthday is today, June 24, but I received this deliciously-bad-for-you-indulgence on Tuesday. Everyone, meet The Original Ice Cream Cake by Carvel (according to the box). This chilly delight came complete with frozen whipped cream icing. Seth listens well.

And check this out! I received the above cake as a surprise while dining at the Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World! (Special thanks to the Yerington's for the cake!) Last week, we stayed 5 days, 5 nights in the resort and visited all the major parks (no water parks). Let's just say it has taken us just as long to recuperate, but was so much fun!
And speaking of Disney...here's a sneak peak of one sight we saw :) More coming to the blog this weekend!

Amanda & Frank: a Saint Louis wedding, the Arch and Busch Stadium!

I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda and Frank through Darbi, an old college classmate of Amanda's and a fellow photographer who I've recently connected with. This was the first wedding I've photographed as second-shooter, and it was very rewarding and tons of fun! Darbi was great to work with because 1) she's really good at what she does, and 2) she gave me freedom to be creative and work independently. Not to mention that's she's just pretty easy-going and full of lots of laughs... as were Amanda and Frank and their 12-person bridal party!

For those who are familiar with my work, you know I approach photography from a documentary perspective, regardless of subject matter. If you're new to the blog, well, now you know :) Being that I was the second-shooter, I had even more creative license to record moments non-tradtionally and also experiment with a style that I don't spend much time on: portrait photography. We had a good 2+ hours to romp around downtown with the bridal party for creative portraits, and it was one of my favorite parts of the day. Because of this, I'll be posting waaaay more posed shots than you''d normally see on a single wedding post, but several still have a documentary flair about them.

Anyway, enough about all this! On to the photographs!

tortilla recipe...sort of

It seems my tortilla photos from the last post have left some readers hungry for the recipe. I must preface this by saying that it's not so much about a recipe as it is about experience and consistency. Remember, I said that my Grandmother has been perfecting her technique for 70+ years, so it's going to take some practice!

It's not even my Grandmother's recipe that I follow...because she doesn't use a recipe! She measures by sight and touch and she nails it every time. She is a tortilla genius. She can make any size batch she wants and somehow knows the perfect proportions for the ingredients. On the other had, I have to follow measurements or I am doomed to fail, so I refer to a randomly Googled recipe that Seth found one day. Click here to go to the recipe page. Ultimately, I think you can start with any recipe--the key is practice, practice, practice, like so many other things.

Basically, tortillas are made from five ingredients: flour, baking powder, salt, fat and water. It's the "fat" part that will vary for some people. We don't buy lard or shortening in our household, which are the two most common fats to use in the recipe. Instead, we substitute with oil, specifically canola oil, although we first tried olive oil. Changing the fat will change the outcome, noticeably in flavor as lard will likely appeal to the meat eater with that smoky rendered animal fat (honestly, this is hands down what makes my Grandma's tortillas what they are, flavor-wise!)

Also, you'll need a good cast iron plate or skillet, or what is referred to as a comal, which is a plate with a handle. I use a plate that likely has some other official name but I'm not sure. It was handed down to us from my Grandma and it's about 8 inches in diameter--perfect for taco-size tortillas. You'll notice it in the pics from the previous post, specifically under the stack of finished tortillas and the close up of the single tortilla cooking and bubbling up. Anyway, regardless of what you use, it has to be cast iron and it has to be preheated. Again, this will take some time but may come a bit easier to those with a gas stovetop so you can fine tune the flame a bit better.

Two other things that effect the outcome are the kneading process (knead too long and it will yield tough tortillas that are hard to roll out, in my experience) and the rising process (the dough has to rest at least 10 minutes so you get a light and fluffy tortilla rather than a dense one).

Bottom line, with a little patience, consistency and repetition you'll be making homemade tortillas in no time. It took me years to get enthused about carrying on this tradition, but thankfully I saw the light after Seth's attempts at tortilla making. Although I don't make them quite the same as Grandma, it's still "from scratch" and waaaay better than any partially hydrogenated, loaded with preservatives, lasts for weeks on end, bleached flour discs from a factory. Not to mention that those store bought ones taste like soap. Yes, that's right. Store brand or name brand, I think the preservatives are reminiscent of Dawn detergent. Don't believe me. Try a big 'ol bite of a plain tortilla from the store--no spreads, sauces, fillings, etc, just plain tortilla. Now close your eyes and focus on that aftertaste. Yum, freshly washed dishes. Now throw the rest of them away and start mixing up those five ingredients!

tortillas: the real way

Yum. Black bean tacos with homemade tortillas. And spinach. And salsa. And cheese AND sour cream. Because, two fats are better than one. Did I mention homemade tortillas?

We've been dabbling with making our own tortillas over the past year. First it was Seth who made them, and then I became interested because, well, I thought I could make better ones. And I can, so I do. I am the tortilla maker in our house. However, it's ultimately my Grandmother who makes the best tortillas. EVER. I'm not even going to attempt to compare my tortillas to hers (she's been making them for 70+ years). So instead I will just post a few images of the tortilla making process and let you marvel at my talent. Enchiladas, anyone?

Mother's Day

After dinner last night I asked Seth to take some photographs of me and Logan to commemorate Mother's Day. I think he got some great ones, don't you?!? I can't believe I'm going to turn 30 next month and Logan will be three in August. Wow. Neither of us looks our age. Logan's usually mistaken for being older, and as it has always been my story, I look young for my age. But now that I'm weeks away from 30, I think I'll start embracing that!

I love this image. This is very representative of our son and his obsession with food and the kitchen. He likes to help us cook (the apron reads "daddy's little helper"--check out the foot and handprint, too) and he LOVES to eat. He's a raw foods child and will opt for an apple or orange over a brownie anytime. No joke.

The other thing I really like about this image is that it's almost completely straight-out-of-camera (SOOC). I brought out the highlights just a tad on the countertop and cabinet reflection to show more detail and, well, there you have it!

This is the kind of image that makes my heart smile: one with light and layers and depth and emotion... a real moment.

A Night in Review

Wow, how do I begin...

Friday was a great night for me. Despite the rain and my bummer mood at the beginning of the day, I managed to put what I couldn't control aside and enjoy the celebration of three months of hard work. The Artrageous exhibit and business launch party were a success, but not without the help of wonderful friends and family.

-Mom and Dad, thank you for making the extended trip and being here on such an important occasion. Your support means so much and I love making you proud. What kid wouldn't.
-Charley and Gloria, thank you for all that you do to encourage and support my dream. I couldn't ask for better in-laws. And Charley, those pecan tartlet-thingys you brought were a hit!
-Seth, my husband, my best friend, my love. You deserve the biggest thanks. Funny how when we think we're least prepared to take a risk is when we actually do it. Thank you for encouraging me and believing in me. Thank you for all that you do for our family, your hard work and dedication. At times, this (launching a business) hasn't been the easiest road for us, and I'm quite certain I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you a thousand times over for for your support. I love you so much!
- Logan, you're only 2 1/2 years old so you can't read this, but thank you for being the best son ever and putting up with me and the camera that is always in your face. But with cheeks like that, who coUld resist taking photos of you? I think you were the hit of the evening!

Also, special thanks goes to Kelly Coalier of Orchids & Art for framing all of my work for the show and to David Spear for providing the studio space for my exhibit and party. I'd also like to applaud the men of Ramblin' Daniel for the acoustical entertainment throughout the evening. Seth, Justin, Kyle and Todd did a wonderful job of keeping the mood upbeat despite the dreary weather!

And who could of missed the dessert bar! We were able to keep a huge table stocked with delicious (mostly) homemade treats, but not without the combined effort from friends and family. Thank you Mom and Dad, Charley and Gloria, Carrie, Heather, Trey, Jessica, Kelley, Megan and Emma (hope I didn't forget anyone) for providing the ingredients and labor to create wonderful desserts for the party, serving platters and floral arrangements. It all looked and tasted fabulous!!!

Lastly, I know that some of you want to see pictures from the show. Funny thing is, I didn't take any during the event. I took a few shots of the set-up, but that was it. I really struggled with the choice of weather to document the occasion or enjoy it without a camera. I opted for the latter, and in the end, I am grateful. As a photographer, I spend lots of time photographing for other people, recording moments that they don't want to forget. I certainly don't want to forget Friday night, but I don't believe it would have been as successful with me stuck behind a camera for the evening. Friday was a celebration of three months of preparation and planning and I had so much fun meeting new people, seeing old friends, chatting and laughing and tapping my toes to the music. I couldn't have done all that with camera in hand. It was nice to be able to step back and look around the room at the people who came to see me and my work and that support meant SO much. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.

In the end, I'm sure I'll post a few of the set-up shots here on the blog sometime this week. And if anyone reading this took pictures, please don't hesitate to email me a few. I'd love to see what you got.

Rain, rain, GO AWAY! Come again after 9pm!

Okay, folks. No lovely photo post today... just business talk.

Today is THE day, a day I've been anticipating for three months. The Artrageous Fridays event and my Launch Party kicks off at 6 p.m. ... RAIN OR SHINE. I've been preparing desserts for the past two days, as have numerous fabulous friends who've pitched in to lend a helping hand. I've also purchased wine and arranged for musical entertainment. But what is most important is the photography and the opportunity to show the community my labor of love. And I am completely bumming about this rain and how it turns people into hermit crabs. Umbrellas were made for a reason--so dig yours out, put on some shoes that you don't mind getting wet, and get out the door for this event tonight!

My guess is that all the other participants of AF would echo my plea. And some are artists are traveling from out of town to be here. We have worked really hard at putting together some great things for you to see and hear and would really appreciate the community support by turning out in person to visit with us.

I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces, and meeting new ones---so, see you at six! Thanks!

Artrageous Fridays & Rebecca Allen Photography

It's beginning to sink in now. I just received my launch party postcards yesterday and I'm soooo excited to distribute them and get the word out about Artrageous Fridays and my participation. However, this is my first time exhibiting my work at an arts event and I must admit I'm really nervous. In most situations, I'm usually the girl who stands back and quietly observes rather than the one who is vocal and seeks attention. This is a really big leap for me, putting myself and my work out there for public scrutiny. Don't get me wrong, although I admit to being nervous, I'm really quite excited and committed to making this event and my business a success. I hope that you will come and visit me at Artrageous Fridays on April 23rd. I look forward to meeting new people and making new friends!

I definitely want to write a bit more about my exhibit and the event soon. Right now, I'm headed out the door with a box full of postcards to hand out!

shoes with strings

"I want shoes with strings, Daddy."

It's a simple request and one that will be granted soon. Logan has been asking us to buy "shoes with strings" for him for some time now. The need is even more urgent since Seth bought himself a pair of new running shoes this weekend. Needless to say, Logan is jealous of the new kicks with laces.

Logan actually wore Chuck Taylor All Star Converse shoes last spring and I thought he looked super cute and grown-up in them. Maybe he'll get the high top version this year, although I suppose that may not be as appropriate for spring and summer. Either way, Logan will get his shoes with strings!

Just Because

It's Monday morning. Ugh. Time to get back to the weekly grind. My goal this week is to finish my edit for the gallery show and then send the files off to the printer. While going through images this morning, I came across the one posted above. I just love it's simplicity. That's pretty much Logan's standard expression when he sees me with the camera. Sometimes he'll ham it up, but mostly he'll just ignore me. I can't tell if he's going to grow up comfortable having his picture taken or if my profession is going to make him run as far away from a camera as possible. He's my go-to subject so I don't blame him for getting a little irritated with me when I'm in his business all the time. Now that he's talking, I'm just waiting for him to say, "Mom, do you haaaaave to?

Sorry, I've been a bit absent from the blog. Once I got the basic set up of the blog designed and functioning I threw myself into culling through hundreds--probably thousands--of images for MY UPCOMING EXHIBIT (yay!) for Artrageous Friday on April 23. Lots of time and late nights (more like early mornings) have been spent in front of my computer and pouring over printouts to edit before sending files to the lab. I'm so excited to see the final framed pieces of photographic art. This will be my first exhibit and it's just for that one night, but I'm excited because it will coincide with the official launch of my photography business! I can't wait!

Now that I've peaked your interest, more details on the event to come soon...

Oh yeah, and there will be an awesome acoustic band, dessert bar, wine and lots of fun and laughter. Just sayin'. More to come...

Since I'm just starting my business I have yet to find an album company that really compliments the style of photography I want to provide for my clients. I believe that my documentary approach to photographic storytelling is best viewed in an album format to bring all of the components of the day together, such as: details and scene setters, couple and group portraits and journalistic coverage of the preparation, ceremony and reception.

Ideally, my base price would include service fees for my time and talent along with purchase of a signature product... hence, the album. But, until I find the perfect album, I will be substituting a DVD of the high-resolution images in it's place. Of course the high res DVD will always be available as an a-la-carte item to add to your package when I do switch to include an album as my signature product. I just wanted to explain a little so it might clear confusion if/when I change my prices.

And as for right now, I'm still finagling the prices as I learn to account for start up/overhead/cost, taxes and profit. When I have them set, I'll post them.

It's likely this will be the way posts are (mostly text), until I officially launch this party! I'm looking forward to learning along this journey and will try to record it here. Thanks for reading...
